Meet Beryl

Aged 6, Kenya

Beryl lives with her mother and siblings in a rented single room. Their grandmother takes care of them. Inside the home the areas are divided by bed sheets which are hung. They have a living area with two small armchairs and a sleeping area with one bed. Together with eight other households, they share a well and a pit latrine. Beryl’s mother's income is limited and is used to pay the rent and to buy medication for Beryl's sister who suffers from an illness. Beryl’s mother can only work very close to home and some days is not able to work at all due to taking care of her ill daughter. By joining the Stand by Me Sponsorship programme Beryl will be able to receive support with schooling, clothing, food and medical care. Beryl can be mistaken for being a bit shy at first, but she loves people. She likes playing ‘house’ with her friends and is enjoying school and making friends. She also loves her class teacher and says that she wants to be just like her when she grows up.

Where Beryl lives

The Open Arms project is joining the Stand by Me family in January 2022. Open Arms International was founded in 2006 to meet the immediate needs of orphaned and abandoned children in western Kenya who were suffering from a wide variety of life-threatening diseases. After the 2008 political violence left thousands of children orphaned, abandoned and homeless, the project grew to support more children. Today, the Open Arms Village is now home to over 150 children with 10 purpose-built family homes.
