Meet Maited

Aged 9, Colombia

Maited lives with her family in her grandfather's 3-bedroom house. They have a bathroom in poor condition and a kitchen in their backyard. There is a living room with furniture but the condition is poor. They have electricity and gas, but do not have clean water. They have to fetch it from a farm. Maited shares her bedroom with her grandparents and brother. Her mum Yisela is a housewife and sells food to her neighbours. Maited does not live with her father, and he does not contribute to her personal expenses. Her brother is Alan, aged 1. Her grandfather Wilson works as a banana packager, and earns less than the minimum wage. He contributes to the household expenses. Her grandmother, uncles, an aunt, and a cousin live with her too. It is difficult to cover all the family's needs. Maited is in 2nd grade at elementary school, and her favourite subject is math, because she likes counting. She enjoys going to school, because she loves to study. She is very quiet and organized. When she grows up, she would like to be a doctor. In her free time, she enjoys drawing cartoons, watching TV, playing with a unicorn toy and riding her bike. Her favourite colour is fuchsia. She enjoys eating chicken or fish. She sometimes attends a Christian church with her family. Maited attends the Stand by Me Care Centre, and she enjoys coming. She is very happy with the idea of having a sponsor. With sponsorship provision she will have access to academic support and nutritious food.

Where Maited lives

The gulf between the haves and the have-nots in Colombia is alarming. Decades of civil war and conflict have resulted in a country plagued by violence and murder. For six million children deep in poverty, a lack of educational opportunities and malnutrition is an everyday reality. Children have severe health issues worsened due to not being able to afford medical treatment. Many children suffer from psychological problems as a result of neglect, abuse and violence experienced in their homes.

We established a care centre in 2015 to support families through educational provision, meals, counselling, training and housing support. Every day, our children come to our care centre eager to learn, play and receive emotional support.
