When Covid-19 began to spread across the world, Stand by Me had to close all of their schools, including the Abdi Academy in Ethiopia, to protect the children and their families. With little access to water, soap, sanitiser, having no purchasing power to buy enough food they knew the children in their care and their families were at risk of malnourishment and even starvation.
In order to ensure no child went hungry they made a commitment to provide monthly food parcels to the families. Thanks to an amazing response to an emergency food appeal they have so far been able to provide regular monthly food parcels for over 1,500 families throughout the course of the pandemic.
Now that the schools are being allowed to open, bringing the children back safely is a priority. One way in which they will keep them safe and socially distanced is to bring them back on a rota system which will mean instead of the usual 5 days a week of school they will be attending for 2 or 3 days.
This means they continue to face the challenge of how to feed the children when they are not in school and so they are going to extend the monthly food parcels the children and their families receive for the next 6 months.
As a school family we want to try and help meet this need to provide food parcels for the children and their families in Dembi Dollo and so we would be so grateful for any contribution you can make towards the 470 food parcels they need per month to bring security and hope to a family.
Stand by Me is Chepstow House School’s international charity partner. For the past five years we have been learning about and supporting the children, their families and the teachers of a school called the Abdi Academy in Dembi Dollo, Ethiopia. The children that attend this school live in extreme poverty and our support helps to provide them with two meals a day, healthcare when needed and a life changing education. These children have dreams just like us and with our support we hope they can change their futures and become who they were created to be.
