Meet Laurith

Aged 11, Colombia

Laurith lives with her grandmother, mother, uncle and aunts. Her mother does not have a steady job, so it is hard for her to cover all her family's expenses. Laurith’s grandmother helps to support them. Their house is made of wood with plastic sheets and a tin roof. There is no bathroom so they use a septic tank. They have electricity but no running water, so they collect it from the river. Laurith shares a bedroom with her mother.

At the Care Centre with sponsorship provision, Laurith has access to receive emotional support, nutritious food, and guidance and assistance with her daily school assignments.

Laurith enjoys math and in her free time, she likes to play hopscotch, skip and play kitchens with her friends and ride her bike. She says she would like to be a doctor when she grows up.

Where Laurith lives

The gulf between the haves and the have-nots in Colombia is alarming. Decades of civil war and conflict have resulted in a country plagued by violence and murder. For six million children deep in poverty, a lack of educational opportunities and malnutrition is an everyday reality. Children have severe health issues worsened due to not being able to afford medical treatment. Many children suffer from psychological problems as a result of neglect, abuse and violence experienced in their homes.

We established a care centre in 2015 to support families through educational provision, meals, counselling, training and housing support. Every day, our children come to our care centre eager to learn, play and receive emotional support.
