Meet Marisol

Dominican Republic

Marisol lives with her mother and brother in a small house made of wood. The living conditions at home are very basic, but the relationships they have in the family are good and positive. Marisol is called by the name 'Sol' which means 'Sun' in Spanish. We accepted Marisol into our school where she greatly enjoys her education and well as receiving medical care and regular meals and spending time with her friends. Marisol is polite and caring and very respectful of her teachers and empathetic with her friends. She greatly enjoys singing and mime and taking part in competitions at school. She also loves to read and colour. With the help of a sponsor, Marisol will gain the confidence she needs to thrive.

Where Marisol lives

Despite being a popular holiday destination, the Dominican Republic is a country steeped in poverty – major advances in the tourism industry have only added further to the divide between the rich and poor. High unemployment remains a serious problem and many children do not have access to a basic education or simple healthcare. There are over 220,000 orphaned children on this small island and thousands suffer from malnutrition.

The Eva Russell School provides free education to children from the poorest backgrounds. Without our support, these children would never attend school. Our children's village provides a loving family home for orphaned and at risk children.
