Meet Jean Carlos

Dominican Republic

Jean Carlos and his brothers came to live at the residential home following a request by his mother. His parents were together at the time but they are now divorced. Jean Carlos' mother does not work and his father was abusive toward her and the children. He is an alcoholic and gets very angry when drunk. The family live in a rented one room tin house in a very dangerous neighborhood in Santo Domingo, the main city. When Jean Carlos and his brothers came to the home they were malnourished and weak. Jean Carlos still appears short and thin for his age although he is a good eater. He likes to play with the other children at the orphange and is very kind and gentle to others. Jean Carlos and his brothers live at Casa de alabanza with ten other children. He is always smiling and is in good spirits all the time. He loves to go to church on Sunday and to sing and pray.

Where Jean Carlos lives

Despite being a popular holiday destination, the Dominican Republic is a country steeped in poverty – major advances in the tourism industry have only added further to the divide between the rich and poor. High unemployment remains a serious problem and many children do not have access to a basic education or simple healthcare. There are over 220,000 orphaned children on this small island and thousands suffer from malnutrition.

The Eva Russell School provides free education to children from the poorest backgrounds. Without our support, these children would never attend school. Our children's village provides a loving family home for orphaned and at risk children.
