Meet Hana

Aged 14, Ethiopia

Hana lives with her parents and younger sister in a two roomed house in poor living conditions. She has no bed to sleep on and sadly sleeps on a long chair with no cover. Hana and her sister collect water from the nearby river which is a ten minute walk away. Toilet facilities and sanitation are poor. Hana's father has health problems and cannot work. Her mother is the only provider in the family and earns a small income as a day labourer. She strives to support her family with food, medication and other basic needs but her her income is insufficient. Hana is a friendly and polite girl. She is enjoying learning new things at the Abdi Academy and her favourite subject is 'Afaan Oromo' (her native language). She enjoys playing volleyball and helps out her family in her spare time.

Where Hana lives

Ethiopia is one of the poorest countries in the world. Famine, HIV/Aids and extreme poverty have resulted in millions of orphans and a life of hardship for the majority of its population. Nearly one million children are orphaned as a result of HIV/Aids. A lack of investment in education and a high dependency on child labour has left five million children without access to an education. Educational opportunities for girls are lower than boys as they are expected to do domestic work or marry at an early age.

Our two schools, the Bethany School and the Abdi Academy are today providing the poorest children with a quality education, daily food, health care and family support. Our Children’s Village has two family homes which care for orphaned and at risk children.
