Meet Obsa

Aged 8, Ethiopia

Obsa lives with his parents and siblings in a three roomed mud house in very poor conditions. The house has no proper furniture and they sleep on the floor on a plastic mat. When we met Obsa he was wearing old plastic shoes and only had one set of clothes for both day and night. Obsa's father has health issues and can not work and so his mother is the sole provider for the family working as a day labourer. Obsa and his family needed help so he now attends the Abdi Academy where he receives an education, medical support, shoes, uniform and two meals a day. Obsa is a friendly and active boy who makes friends easily and is enjoying school. A loving sponsor get help provide the encouragement he needs to reach his potential.

Where Obsa lives

Ethiopia is one of the poorest countries in the world. Famine, HIV/Aids and extreme poverty have resulted in millions of orphans and a life of hardship for the majority of its population. Nearly one million children are orphaned as a result of HIV/Aids. A lack of investment in education and a high dependency on child labour has left five million children without access to an education. Educational opportunities for girls are lower than boys as they are expected to do domestic work or marry at an early age.

Our two schools, the Bethany School and the Abdi Academy are today providing the poorest children with a quality education, daily food, health care and family support. Our Children’s Village has two family homes which care for orphaned and at risk children.
