Meet Charu

Ethiopia

Charu is from a family which struggles to make ends meet. He has three brothers and they live with their parents in a rented mud home. His father has terrible back pain and is unable to stand easily, so his mother tries to earn some money by working in different households which is also proving difficult as she is also suffering with her health. Two of Charu's brothers wash cars and earn a bit money to help their family but they are unable to pay for even their basic needs and struggle to pay the rent on time.  Life is very difficult for this family so after considering their situation Stand by Me has accepted Charu into our school.  Charu is a loveable character. He is happy and loves school and the teachers. He enjoys learning and the Affan Oromo (local language) is his favourite subject. He says he wants to be a doctor and treat patients when he is older. He loves running around. Charu is from a Christian family and attends church. A sponsor will help him gain the confidence he needs to thrive.

Where Charu lives

Ethiopia is one of the poorest countries in the world. Famine, HIV/Aids and extreme poverty have resulted in millions of orphans and a life of hardship for the majority of its population. Nearly one million children are orphaned as a result of HIV/Aids. A lack of investment in education and a high dependency on child labour has left five million children without access to an education. Educational opportunities for girls are lower than boys as they are expected to do domestic work or marry at an early age.

Our two schools, the Bethany School and the Abdi Academy are today providing the poorest children with a quality education, daily food, health care and family support. Our Children’s Village has two family homes which care for orphaned and at risk children.
