Meet Nimona

Aged 8, Ethiopia

Nimona lives with her mother, older sister and grandmother. Their home is sparsely furnished with no beds, but they sleep on rugs on the floor. They buy their drinking water and collect some water from the river 20 minutes walk away. Nimona only owns a single set of clothes and one pair of shoes. Nimona's father left the family, so her mother tries to support her family by selling vegetables in the market.  However it doesn't cover all their needs, and they are not able to have all their daily meals.

Stand by Me are now providing Nimona with a nutritious diet, an education, clothes, shoes and health care services. Her favourite subject is English and she loves studying and learning new things. She is a friendly and active girl with hopes of being a teacher one day. In her spare time she enjoys playing a local game with other children called (Qoda Qoda). Every Sunday Nimona attends church with her family.

The love and encouragement of a sponsor can help Nimona achieve her potential and we hope, go on to do great things for her and her family.

Where Nimona lives

Ethiopia is one of the poorest countries in the world. Famine, HIV/Aids and extreme poverty have resulted in millions of orphans and a life of hardship for the majority of its population. Nearly one million children are orphaned as a result of HIV/Aids. A lack of investment in education and a high dependency on child labour has left five million children without access to an education. Educational opportunities for girls are lower than boys as they are expected to do domestic work or marry at an early age.

Our two schools, the Bethany School and the Abdi Academy are today providing the poorest children with a quality education, daily food, health care and family support. Our Children’s Village has two family homes which care for orphaned and at risk children.

How your donation is used
