Meet Biniyam

Ethiopia

Biniyam lives with his mother and older sister in a one roomed rented mud house in very poor conditions. Biniyam's father was killed eight years ago due to conflict regarding the farmland. Now Biniyam's mother is the only breadwinner for the family. She is a day labourer and has no salary or permanent income. With the small income she earns she cannot cover all the house expenses or provide for Biniyam's needs. Biniyam doesn't have a bed and instead sleeps on a makeshift mattress made of hay. He has no shoes and wears poor quality clothes. His family don't have access to drinking water and so they rely on their neighbour to share water. Stand by Me Dembi Dollo accepted Biniyam into its care. Biniyam now receives a life-changing education, medical support and nutritious food. He is a polite and friendly boy who enjoys learning at school. His favourite subject is Amharic (the national language). His favourite hobby is playing football. In the future he dreams of becoming an Engineer.

Where Biniyam lives

Ethiopia is one of the poorest countries in the world. Famine, HIV/Aids and extreme poverty have resulted in millions of orphans and a life of hardship for the majority of its population. Nearly one million children are orphaned as a result of HIV/Aids. A lack of investment in education and a high dependency on child labour has left five million children without access to an education. Educational opportunities for girls are lower than boys as they are expected to do domestic work or marry at an early age.

Our two schools, the Bethany School and the Abdi Academy are today providing the poorest children with a quality education, daily food, health care and family support. Our Children’s Village has two family homes which care for orphaned and at risk children.
