Meet Sanyi

Ethiopia

Sanyi is an only child. His mother died some years ago. His father remarried and is now living with his new wife in a rural area around Dembi Dollo. He doesn't support his son. Being abandoned, Sanyi has had to endure tough living conditions during his childhood. A relative of Sanyi took him to their house and he is now living with them in Dembi Dollo. They are a large family of seven including Sanyi. His relative cannot afford to buy clothes, shoes, food and other basic needs as they are very poor themselves. They needed someone to help so that Sanyi can go to school. For this reason, we accepted Sanyi into the Abdi Academy School and he is now receiving a life changing education, food and medication. Life has now improved for Sanyi and he is happily attending school. Without Stand By Me's support for him, his future hope would have been bleak. He is a lovely active boy who enjoys school and playing different games like football with his friends.

Where Sanyi lives

Ethiopia is one of the poorest countries in the world. Famine, HIV/Aids and extreme poverty have resulted in millions of orphans and a life of hardship for the majority of its population. Nearly one million children are orphaned as a result of HIV/Aids. A lack of investment in education and a high dependency on child labour has left five million children without access to an education. Educational opportunities for girls are lower than boys as they are expected to do domestic work or marry at an early age.

Our two schools, the Bethany School and the Abdi Academy are today providing the poorest children with a quality education, daily food, health care and family support. Our Children’s Village has two family homes which care for orphaned and at risk children.
