Meet Elvis

Aged 12, Kenya

Elvis lives with his parents, older brother, younger sister and his nephew. Although his father is alive and lives with them, his mother is the one who mainly takes care of the home. His father is a retired driver, as painful leg cramps have now hindered him from driving.

The family live in their own home and they use firewood as cooking fuel and fetch water from their own well (boiling it first before drinking). Their house has an iron sheet roof and floors that are cemented. It is in a fairly good condition and their toilet is usable.

The family has done some domestic farming, to help to feed themselves. One time when Elvis was playing, he had an accident and was injured, which has left him with ongoing problems. Understanding this family's needs and situation, Elvis has now been accepted onto the sponsorship programme, enabling additional support.

Elvis is a shy young boy and finds it hard to express himself and to say what he wants to say. He loves taking care of the infant in their home and loves playing tag with his friends. He would like to be an English teacher when he grows up.

Where Elvis lives

The Open Arms project is joining the Stand by Me family in January 2022. Open Arms International was founded in 2006 to meet the immediate needs of orphaned and abandoned children in western Kenya who were suffering from a wide variety of life-threatening diseases. After the 2008 political violence left thousands of children orphaned, abandoned and homeless, the project grew to support more children. Today, the Open Arms Village is now home to over 150 children with 10 purpose-built family homes.
