Meet Cosmas

Aged 10, Kenya

Cosmas and his brother live with their parents in their own home on their own piece of land. His mother cares for the family and does casual jobs like washing clothes for people to try and earn a living.

The family home has mud walls with an iron roof and floors made of earth. They use firewood as their main source of fuel for cooking and have piped water from a nearby river. Their house and toilet are both in a good condition, although basic. Cosmas' mother has a small farm where she carries out some crop farming to help provide food for the home. They buy their milk, every morning, from their neighbour who has a cow.

Understanding the needs of the family, Cosmas has been accepted onto the sponsorship programme, which will help him gain an education and have needed support.

Cosmas loves school so much and says that English is his favourite subject. During his free time, he likes playing football with his friends. He is a very confident boy who loves going to church and he aspires to be a police officer.

Where Cosmas lives

The Open Arms project is joining the Stand by Me family in January 2022. Open Arms International was founded in 2006 to meet the immediate needs of orphaned and abandoned children in western Kenya who were suffering from a wide variety of life-threatening diseases. After the 2008 political violence left thousands of children orphaned, abandoned and homeless, the project grew to support more children. Today, the Open Arms Village is now home to over 150 children with 10 purpose-built family homes.
