Meet Asbel

Aged 9, Kenya

Asbel is the fourth child in his family of seven children. He lives with some of his siblings and father in a rented mud house. It is a small place with limited facilities.

Asbel's mother left the home with three of his younger siblings, so Asbel's older brother cooks for them. They have created a small stoned cooking area that is in the open air. They gather small sticks from around the bushes that they use as firewood and have one solar bulb that they use at night especially when doing their homework. Asbel's family share a well with four other neighbours and they find the water is clean enough for drinking. They also share one old pit latrine.

Abel's father is a casual labourer, which provides insufficient income to provide for all their household needs, plus the house rent, the children's school fees and any medical needs. He is however hopeful that one day he will be able to build a nice house for his family as he has been gifted some land.

Asbel is shy and smart. He hopes to become a police officer when he grows up. He enjoys playing football with his friends whenever he can.

Where Asbel lives

The Open Arms project is joining the Stand by Me family in January 2022. Open Arms International was founded in 2006 to meet the immediate needs of orphaned and abandoned children in western Kenya who were suffering from a wide variety of life-threatening diseases. After the 2008 political violence left thousands of children orphaned, abandoned and homeless, the project grew to support more children. Today, the Open Arms Village is now home to over 150 children with 10 purpose-built family homes.
