Meet Alexandra

Aged 13, Romania

Alexandra lives with her father and brother in her father’s two-bedroom house. Her mother sadly left the home soon after her birth and her father has raised three children by himself with help from paternal grandparents living in the village. Alexandra is the youngest and she has a sister now married and a brother two years older. The grandparents are getting older and they cannot keep up with the children anymore when their father is at work, so Alexandra’s father has enrolled her into our sponsorship programme to attend the day care centre after school.

Alexandra is very sociable and energetic. At first she did not enjoy being at the centre because she was used to making her own plans after school, but in time she has begun to enjoy the activities and now she considers the time she spends at the centre "the best part" of her day. With support, she can continue to have access to the meals, care and help with her school work provided at the centre. Alexandra is a smart girl, but she needs constant encouragement and supervising with her learning.

Alexandra helps at home by cooking and washing clothes, while her brother is doing the harder chores. She loves pizza and ice-cream. Alexandra likes to folk dance.

Where Alexandra lives

Even as a member of the European Union, Romania still suffers huge corruption and many families live in conditions that fall below the poverty line. A corrupt educational system has meant that a good education is unattainable for many children. Thousands of young adults are suffering the effects of growing up in desperately underfunded state orphanages, traumatised by the dirty conditions and undignified treatment.

Our Denisa Day Care Centre is providing free education, daily food and family support to children who are trapped in poverty and illiteracy. Our children's home provides a loving family to rescued girls who are growing into confident young women.
