Meet Vanerith
Aged 9, Colombia
Vanerith lives with her family in a two-bedroom house which belongs to a relative. They have a bathroom, kitchen and living space, as well as electricity and gas, but no clean water. They take water from a river to wash their clothes. Her dad Luis is a labourer and her mum is a housewife. They find it difficult to cover all the family's needs.
Vanerith is in elementary school, and her favourite subject is art, as she likes to colour. She enjoys going to school, because she likes to learn new things. She is happy and friendly. When she grows up, she would like to be a nurse to help sick people. In her free time, she enjoys drawing, reading tales, playing with her friends, skating and making crafts. Her favourite colour is Yellow. She likes to eat rice, meat, fried plantain and salad.
Vanerith attends the Stand by Me Care Centre, and she enjoys coming to receive help from her teachers. With sponsorship provision, she can have access to academic support along with nutritious food.
Where Vanerith lives
The gulf between the haves and the have-nots in Colombia is alarming. Decades of civil war and conflict have resulted in a country plagued by violence and murder. For six million children deep in poverty, a lack of educational opportunities and malnutrition is an everyday reality. Children have severe health issues worsened due to not being able to afford medical treatment. Many children suffer from psychological problems as a result of neglect, abuse and violence experienced in their homes.
We established a care center in 2015 to support families through educational provision, meals, counselling, training and housing support. Every day, our children come to our care center eager to learn, play and receive emotional support.
