Meet Daliana
Aged 5, Colombia
Daliana lives with her parents and brothers in a three-bedroom house, but with no access to clean water. Her dad William is a machinery assistant, earning the minimum wage. Her mum Diosa is a housewife and a student. She is studying health and safety in the workplace. Her brothers are Dilan and Dayler. They find it difficult to cover all the family's needs.
Understanding their needs, Daliana has joined her brothers at the Stand by Me Emmanuel Care Centre, where with sponsorship provision she can attend and learn new things with her friends in a safe environment and receive educational support and nutritious meals.
Daliana is at elementary school, and she enjoys going to school. Her favourite subject is math, since she likes numbers. She is a happy, sociable and kind girl. In free time, she enjoys singing, riding her bike and playing with kitchen toy accessories. At home, she helps her mum to wash the dishes. Her favourite toys are baby dolls and a Minnie Mouse teddy bear and her favourite colour is purple. She likes to eat stewed meat, vermicelli rice, blackberry juice, and beet and potato salad. She sometimes attends a Christian church, where she enjoys singing and praying to God. When she grows up, she would like to be a doctor to heal the sick.
Where Daliana lives
The gulf between the haves and the have-nots in Colombia is alarming. Decades of civil war and conflict have resulted in a country plagued by violence and murder. For six million children deep in poverty, a lack of educational opportunities and malnutrition is an everyday reality. Children have severe health issues worsened due to not being able to afford medical treatment. Many children suffer from psychological problems as a result of neglect, abuse and violence experienced in their homes.
We established a care center in 2015 to support families through educational provision, meals, counselling, training and housing support. Every day, our children come to our care center eager to learn, play and receive emotional support.
