Meet Deilis

Aged 6, Colombia

Deilis lives in a two-bedroom rented house with her dad Deiver, her mum Lina and sister Lisdey. The house has limited facilities and no clean water. Her dad does various trades in a farm earning less than the minimum wage. Her mum is a housewife and she works when she is needed once a week at a banana plantation to make boxes in order to put bananas in. At the moment, the production is low and she is not working. The relationship of her parents is not stable, they have separated several times due to lack of responsibility from the father and things have been difficult. Her grandmother provides them with some food. They have to wash their clothes in the house of a relative.

Deilis has been given the opportunity to join the Stand by Me Emmanuel Care Centre, where with sponsorship provision she can attend and have fun with her friends, learning new things in a safe environment and receive academic support and nutritious meals.

Deilis is at elementary school, and her favourite subject is math, because she likes counting. She enjoys going to school, because she likes to learn new things. She is shy, organized and respectful. In free time, she enjoys drawing landscapes and watching television. Her favourite toy is kitchen accessories. Her favourite colour is pink and she likes to eat pasta. She sometimes goes to a Christian church. When she grows up, she would like to be a doctor.

Where Deilis lives

The gulf between the haves and the have-nots in Colombia is alarming. Decades of civil war and conflict have resulted in a country plagued by violence and murder. For six million children deep in poverty, a lack of educational opportunities and malnutrition is an everyday reality. Children have severe health issues worsened due to not being able to afford medical treatment. Many children suffer from psychological problems as a result of neglect, abuse and violence experienced in their homes.

We established a care center in 2015 to support families through educational provision, meals, counselling, training and housing support. Every day, our children come to our care center eager to learn, play and receive emotional support.
