Meet Daniel

Aged 6, Colombia

Daniel lives with his family in a one-bedroom house belonging to a relative. It has electricity and gas, but no clean water, instead they take it from a local river. The relationships in his family are unstable and his dad Daniel has now separated from his mum Mary. His mum is a housewife and his dad works in farming, but the income is insufficient to cover all the family's needs. Daniel has four sisters; Karen, Maria, Mary and Salome and a brother called Jesus.

Learning of their situation, Daniel has now joined the Stand by Me Emmanuel Care Centre, where with sponsorship provision he can attend and have fun learning new things in a safe environment and receive educational support and nutritious meals.

Daniel is at elementary school, and he enjoys going to school. His favourite subject is math, because he loves counting. He is a well-behaved, generous and helpful boy, and he likes sharing with his siblings. However, he sometimes gets angry easily. In free time, he likes dancing, riding his bike, and playing with cars. At home, he helps his mum by sweeping the floor. His favourite colour is green and he likes to eat pasta with ground meat. When he grows up, he would like to be a football player.

Where Daniel lives

The gulf between the haves and the have-nots in Colombia is alarming. Decades of civil war and conflict have resulted in a country plagued by violence and murder. For six million children deep in poverty, a lack of educational opportunities and malnutrition is an everyday reality. Children have severe health issues worsened due to not being able to afford medical treatment. Many children suffer from psychological problems as a result of neglect, abuse and violence experienced in their homes.

We established a care center in 2015 to support families through educational provision, meals, counselling, training and housing support. Every day, our children come to our care center eager to learn, play and receive emotional support.
