Meet Emmanuel

Aged 8, Colombia

Emmanuel lives with his mum, dad, his brothers, his uncle and grandparents in his grandparent's home. His dad works on a farm earning the minimum wage and his mom is currently unemployed. They find it difficult to cover all the family needs. The house has two bedrooms and a bathroom and kitchen in good condition. They have electricity and gas, but they do not have clean water, instead they take it from the river.

Understanding their needs, Emmanuel has been accepted into the Emmanuel Care Centre and through sponsorship provision, he will receive the help he needs, benefitting from nutritious meals, access to healthcare, and vital educational and psychological support. His brothers are also part of the program. Emmanuel enjoys going to school. He is happy, kind, loving, funny, respectful and likes to ask questions. Emmanuel has some difficulty with speech due to tongue tie, and he has a surgery pending. His favorite subject is math.

Emmanuel likes dancing, watching videos, making jokes and painting. He loves soccer and plays it with a friend. He likes to eat rice with meat or fried chicken. He sometimes attends church, and he enjoys coloring and playing games there. When he grows up Emmanuel would like to be a policeman or a soldier.

Where Emmanuel lives

The gulf between the haves and the have-nots in Colombia is alarming. Decades of civil war and conflict have resulted in a country plagued by violence and murder. For six million children deep in poverty, a lack of educational opportunities and malnutrition is an everyday reality. Children have severe health issues worsened due to not being able to afford medical treatment. Many children suffer from psychological problems as a result of neglect, abuse and violence experienced in their homes.

We established a care center in 2015 to support families through educational provision, meals, counselling, training and housing support. Every day, our children come to our care center eager to learn, play and receive emotional support.
