Meet Yerazade

Aged 9, Colombia

Yerazade's mother sadly died and her father does not live with her, so her grandmother Nelly takes care of her. Her grandmother works selling food, such as banana buns and her income is low so an uncle also helps towards providing for both of them. They live in a very humble home and they have to collect their water from a well, and cook with fire.

At the Emmanuel Care Centre Yerazade can receive extra support, reinforcement lessons and nutritional help.

Yerazade's favourite subject is art and she loves drawing and colouring. She likes to play kitchen with her toys and dolls. Yerazade and her grandmother attend the local church.

Where Yerazade lives

The gulf between the haves and the have-nots in Colombia is alarming. Decades of civil war and conflict have resulted in a country plagued by violence and murder. For six million children deep in poverty, a lack of educational opportunities and malnutrition is an everyday reality. Children have severe health issues worsened due to not being able to afford medical treatment. Many children suffer from psychological problems as a result of neglect, abuse and violence experienced in their homes.

We established a care center in 2015 to support families through educational provision, meals, counselling, training and housing support. Every day, our children come to our care center eager to learn, play and receive emotional support.
