Meet Sterlyn

Aged 5, Kenya

Sterlyn lives with his parents and siblings in a three-room house. His father has provided the best he can and is happy that his children have a place that they can call home. His wife sometimes works on farms during the harvest season or will do some laundry for other families to earn a little. The family have a well for their water, and they fetch firewood to prepare their meals. They have planted some maize and also have some chickens for the eggs. Whenever they earn money, they first attend to their daily household needs, pay the school fees and then put money aside for medical emergencies as some of the family suffer with asthma.

By being part of the Stand by Me sponsorship programme, Sterlyn is able to receive a good education, food, school materials, clothing and medical help amongst other blessings.

Sterlyn is full of life and very active. He loves football and can also be found having fun pushing old tyres around the compound.

Where Sterlyn lives

The Open Arms Village was founded in 2006 to meet the immediate needs of orphaned and abandoned children in western Kenya who were suffering from a wide variety of life-threatening diseases. After the 2008 political violence left thousands of children orphaned, abandoned and homeless, the project grew to support more children. Today, the Open Arms Village is now home to over 150 children with 10 purpose-built family homes and the Open Arm Academy is educating children and giving them a hopeful future.
