Meet Kero

Aged 7, Ethiopia

Kero has three older brothers. He lives with his grandmother and siblings in a two room rented mud house. The family sleep on the floor on a hay mattress. They do not have house furniture and no proper kitchen facilities, so prepare their food under a plastic cover make-shift kitchen. They have no clean water available at home so they buy water from a neighbour. Kero has plastic shoes and one set of clothes to wear. Sadly his mother died and then his father left the four children to the care of their grandmother. They are not in touch with him. His grandmother is the only bread winner for the family and she earns a small amount by doing some labour work. Her income does not cover all their expenses, and she is unable to pay for the children's schooling including uniforms.

Due to their poor living conditions and financial situation, Stand By Me accepted Kero into its sponsorship care and support programme. This means we would be able to provide him with a good quality education, a nutritious diet, clothing, shoes, health care and other blessings.

Kero is a friendly and active boy. He is very happy attending school and has settled well into his learning. He shared that he wants to be a medical doctor one day. In his free time he enjoys playing football with his friends. Kero is from a Christian family and he goes to church where he enjoys learning Bible stories and singing songs.

Where Kero lives

Ethiopia is one of the poorest countries in the world. Famine, HIV/Aids and extreme poverty have resulted in millions of orphans and a life of hardship for the majority of its population. Nearly one million children are orphaned as a result of HIV/Aids. A lack of investment in education and a high dependency on child labour has left five million children without access to an education. Educational opportunities for girls are lower than boys as they are expected to do domestic work or marry at an early age.

Our two schools, the Bethany School and the Abdi Academy are today providing the poorest children with a quality education, daily food, health care and family support. Our Children’s Village has two family homes which care for orphaned and at risk children.
