Meet Yadina

Colombia

Yadina is the fourth child in her family. She lives with her mother, father, brothers and sisters in a two room cement house. One of the rooms is used as a living room and kitchen. The other room is used as the bedroom, because there are not enough room, some of the children sleep in the living room. They don't have water in their home and so they go to the river to wash their laundry and dishes as well as collect water to bring home. Yadina's father works at a palm tree plantation, he works six days a week for up to eight hours a day. Yadina's mother stays at home to take care of the children. The income from her father's job is not enough and they struggle to afford the necessary essentials. Yadina now attends the Stand by Me Care Centre where she receives food, healthcare and educational support. Yadina's favourite subject at school is Maths. In her free time she likes to ride her bike and run around with her friends, playing different games. Yadina enjoys going to church with her family and likes to attend the Bible club at the Care Centre with her brother.

Where Yadina lives

The gulf between the haves and the have-nots in Colombia is alarming. Decades of civil war and conflict have resulted in a country plagued by violence and murder. For six million children deep in poverty, a lack of educational opportunities and malnutrition is an everyday reality. Children have severe health issues worsened due to not being able to afford medical treatment. Many children suffer from psychological problems as a result of neglect, abuse and violence experienced in their homes.

We established a care centre in 2015 to support families through educational provision, meals, counselling, training and housing support. Every day, our children come to our care centre eager to learn, play and receive emotional support.
