Meet Maxwel

Aged 6, Kenya

Maxwel lives with his parents and siblings in a one room house which has an earth floor, mud walls and an iron sheet roof. There is a small bed which Maxwel’s parents sleep on with his youngest sister. Maxwel sleeps at his grandparent's home just across the road. Maxwel’s mother cooks just outside the house and they have one plastic stool that is mostly used by his father in the evenings to sit on. They all sit under a tree on the grass during the day or on the bed when evening comes. They fetch their water from a spring that passes by their land and share a pit latrine, which is at the grandparents’ home. Maxwel’s father has planted some maize and they have some chickens for eggs. His mother has recently started saving some money in a savings and lending group. With the additional support through the Stand by Me sponsorship programme, Maxwel will be able to receive a good education, clothing, meals and medical help. Maxwel loves running and could become a runner when he grows up. He loves making his own toys from scratch and then plays with them with his cousin and friends. He enjoys going to church and especially likes his Sunday school class.

Where Maxwel lives

The Open Arms project is joining the Stand by Me family in January 2022. Open Arms International was founded in 2006 to meet the immediate needs of orphaned and abandoned children in western Kenya who were suffering from a wide variety of life-threatening diseases. After the 2008 political violence left thousands of children orphaned, abandoned and homeless, the project grew to support more children. Today, the Open Arms Village is now home to over 150 children with 10 purpose-built family homes.
