Five Years Old

Recently, 11 children at our Open Arms Village celebrated their kindergarten graduation. There was a huge party, not just because they are getting an education, but because they are alive!

These children have survived to the age of five. In Kenya, the fifth birthday has a special significance because thousands of children do not live to see it. According to a recent UNICEF report, 44,000 Kenyan children died last year before their 5th birthday. About 75% of these deaths are caused by preventable illnesses such a pneumonia, diarrhoea and neonatal complications.

The 11 children who graduated got to celebrate their fifth birthday because you were willing to help. Within the last 5 years, each of these children were rescued from tragic situations and conditions. They were able to receive medical care and good nutrition because of your generosity.

One of the top students in the class is Samuel. He was severely malnourished when he arrived at Open Arms Village.

Now, Samuel has one of the best hand writings in the class. He is very smart and compassionate. This little boy is now thriving because you were willing to help. His survival, along with each of the children, is definitely worth celebrating!
