Malvin lives with her parents and siblings in difficult conditions, yet she carries a quiet strength beyond her years. The family resides in a small mud house with rusty iron sheets, located on land owned by a nearby church. The church generously allows them to stay there, but the structure is in poor condition. The walls are cracked, and during the rainy season, water seeps through the weak roof. The sleeping conditions are challenging. There is no water source near their home. Malvin and her siblings must walk a considerable distance to fetch water for cooking, cleaning, and bathing. The journey is tiring, especially after a long day at school. The family relies on the church's pit latrine, which is located some distance away from where they live. This becomes challenging at night or during the rainy season, when accessing the facility is both difficult and unsafe.
Both Malvin's parents work as casual labourers. Their income depends on whether they are fortunate enough to find work on any given day. Some days they earn a small amount; other days they return home empty-handed. As this is an unstable income, providing three meals a day is a challenge.
Malvin attends school faithfully and dreams of building a better future for her family. She understands that education may be her only path out of poverty. With sponsorship support, she can receive the help she and her family needs and be able to persevere and grow with courage and determination.
Your sponsorship will provide Malvin with a quality education, daily meals and will resource our care programmes to meet her individual needs.
The Open Arms Village was founded in 2006 to meet the immediate needs of orphaned and abandoned children in western Kenya who were suffering from a wide variety of life-threatening diseases. After the 2008 political violence left thousands of children orphaned, abandoned and homeless, the project grew to support more children. Today, the Open Arms Village is now home to over 150 children with 10 purpose-built family homes and the Open Arm Academy is educating children and giving them a hopeful future.
When you sponsor Malvin you will receive a pack in the post with her story and photo. Every year you will receive an update about her progress, a new photo and at least one communication from her.
