Meet Kevin
Aged 11, Kenya
Kevin lives with his parents in their own compound in a small house that is made of iron sheets. His father was given the land by his parents. Kevin's father is not able to work due to illness and so his mother is the one who goes to work. Some days they seek refuge at a neighbor's home or at Kevin's grandmother's home if their father is particularly struggling.
Like most of their neighbors, they have one main tap that has been connected by the government and that is where they get all their water from. Although they walk for about five hundred meters to the main tap, his mother is happy that she no longer has to go to the river to fetch their water and that this water is safe. At the back of their house, they have a pit latrine and a small kitchen. His mother has planted some maize for their consumption.
Kevin enjoys learning and reading, but his passion is playing soccer and some athletics, especially the races. He wants to run and hopes to become an athlete when he grows up.
Where Kevin lives
The Open Arms Village was founded in 2006 to meet the immediate needs of orphaned and abandoned children in western Kenya who were suffering from a wide variety of life-threatening diseases. After the 2008 political violence left thousands of children orphaned, abandoned and homeless, the project grew to support more children. Today, the Open Arms Village is now home to over 150 children with 10 purpose-built family homes and the Open Arm Academy is educating children and giving them a hopeful future.
