February on the floor: lifting kids off the ground and into their first bed

Our dream

Sometimes despite all the amazing progress we see in our kids' lives and how well they are doing in their education, when we see the circumstances they return home to, like in Gemechu's film below, we can still feel like we are just scratching the surface. February on the floor is a fundraising event that aim's to bring a huge change to our children's home home lives by providing them with a bed. Sign up to sleep on the floor and receive your fundraising pack and personalised fundraising page.

The Challenge

This February we are challenging you to sleep on the floor for a week of your choice. Everyone’s challenge will be different and you can decide how difficult you want to make it. How long will you sleep on the floor, a week, all the weekends in February, one big Friday night as a group or class? Will you sleep on carpet or a mat, under a blanket or in a sleeping bag, how about a pillow? You can choose how challenging you want to make it once you sign up. The money you raise from donations will help to buy beds for our kids and their families who spend every night sleeping on the cold, hard floor.

Who can do it?

The challenge is open to any age and any fitness and you can do it as an individual, a family or as part of a group whether from your school, church or company. You simply have to be prepared to have a week of uncomfortable sleep in order that you will be the reason one of the kids in our care will no longer have to. To confirm this challenge is right for you, there is advice in our challenge guide which you will receive once you have signed up below!

A bed will transform life for a family

A bed will not only benefit one of our kids but also their whole family. The beds are larger than a standard single so that the family can share the bed but small enough to fit into their homes. A bed also has multiple uses as it can be used as somewhere to sit during the day, items can be stored underneath and it can be used as a table. Your week of discomfort will give a whole family a good night’s sleep, helping them experience comfort and warmth every night!

What do I need to do?

Signing up is very simple to do and we are here to support you through every step of your challenge.

  • Pick a week in February to sleep on the floor
  • Sign up to the challenge. We'll provide you with a fundraising guide and set up your online fundraising page
  • Ask your friends, family and colleagues to sponsor you
  • Make sure you tell as many people as possible about your challenge before, during and after, whether on social media, by email or face to face. We'll even provide example social media posts to help you.

When you've completed your challenge we'll send you a photo and story of the child and family who has benefited thanks to you taking on the challenge!

The cost of a bed

To help encourage people to sponsor you, they will be able to see on your fundraising page what the different elements will cost:

£4 for a pillow

£9 for sheets

£16 for a blanket

£32 for a mattress

£79 for the bed frame

In total £140 will buy a bed and give a child the opportunity to snuggle into a bed for the first time. It will bring them joy and help them wake up every day rested, refreshed and ready for a day of learning and fun.
