Meet Kelvin

Aged 6, Kenya

Kelvin lives with his mother, step father and siblings in a one bedroom rented mud house with an earth floor. On one side of the house they have put large sacks that has all their clothes in and which they use to cover a hole in the mud wall. They have one bed where Kelvin's mother and the youngest child sleep. All the other children sleep on the floor. There is a shared community well just outside their house from where they fetch their water and they use a pit latrine about 100 metres from their home.

Kelvin's mother is their sole provider and she does casual jobs to try and provide for their household needs, their rent and the school fees for her children, but this is a struggle. Learning of their situation, Kelvin has now been accepted onto the sponsorship programme where with support, he has access to a quality education.

Kelvin is a calm shy boy who speaks very little. He says that he loves school and enjoys playing with his friends whenever he can.

Where Kelvin lives

The Open Arms project is joining the Stand by Me family in January 2022. Open Arms International was founded in 2006 to meet the immediate needs of orphaned and abandoned children in western Kenya who were suffering from a wide variety of life-threatening diseases. After the 2008 political violence left thousands of children orphaned, abandoned and homeless, the project grew to support more children. Today, the Open Arms Village is now home to over 150 children with 10 purpose-built family homes.
