30 Years: The Profound Impact of Child Sponsorship

Throughout Stand by Me’s history, thousands of sponsors have built life changing relationships with our children; exchanging letters, sharing photographs and providing the financial support that gives them hope for the future.

Time and again, we witness the genuine connections which provide more than just material support, they offer encouragement, love and a sense of belonging that stays with our children for a lifetime. 

A Life Changed by the Support and Care of Sponsors 

“I was born in 1998, in a Romania that had emerged from communism just nine years earlier. Given this difficult context, I ended up in a state-run orphanage and, later, adopted into a family-style Stand by Me home. My relationship with my sponsors was a special part of this experience. Through letters full of encouragement, they made me feel important and loved. Their support and care deeply influenced me and I always felt they were part of my family. 

They were an example to me, and now I also sponsor a child. I try to help vulnerable people and those in need as much as I can because I know the impact it can have. I’ve learned that, more than money or gifts, the human connection we create is what truly makes the difference. 

I am aware that, for me, abandonment was actually salvation—God’s plan for my life. There were so many people involved, directly or indirectly, in raising me, and for that, I am profoundly grateful. 

I’ve kept a box filled with dozens of letters and photos sent by my sponsors over the years. From time to time, I like to go through them and remember how blessed I was. These memories not only remind me of the love and support I received but also motivate me to pass on the good I’ve been given. 

These people didn’t just change my life—they were a model of generosity and love. Through their example, I’ve learned what it means to give with an open heart. Today, I try to carry forward what I have received by supporting children and people in need, just as I was once helped.”
