Calling all teachers

Stand by Me is involved with two schools in the Chin State, Burma; Lois School is catering for more than 500 children and Grace Children’s Education Centre around 350 children. The students at both schools range in age from 4 – 17.

The two schools are seeking to move towards more child-centred teaching approaches. Three teacher training and resource development visits have already taken place but there is an urgent need for more teachers to share their expertise and help the children enjoy an ever better educational experience.

The teachers are seeking training in pre-school education, foundation, key stage 1 and key stage 2. There is also a demand for teachers of English, Maths, Science, Geography, History and RE at secondary level to assist with the development of the material to be taught, as well as appropriate subject based teaching skills training. We have found that the best training approach is to model lessons, either teaching a real class or through role play where the teachers take the role of students, and explain to the teachers the principles and reasons behind the approaches taken.

We are planning two training visits, one during the first two weeks in July, when teachers in Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland will be on holiday and those in other parts of the UK might request leave of absence. At this time of the year the weather will be hot but bearable. The second visit will take place in November when it is very pleasant, like a good summer’s day here, and would suit those teachers who have retired, are on a career break or are prepared to take leave of absence.

Total costs (flights, accommodation, food and visas, excluding insurance) would be in the range of £1250 – £1500, depending on the costs of flights and internal transport arrangements.

If you feel able to assist these teachers, or want further information, please contact either of our offices or email Robert – Robert@standby.me
