Doctors’ visit to Guacamayal

Amongst the poverty and crime in Guacamayal Colombia the Centro Educativo Cristiano School gives children much more than just an education. It provides medical care, a nutritious food programme, parenting advice, emotional support and love.

We were aware of the many health needs of our children in Colombia and knew that they needed to see a doctor. We opened a health fund to allow us to administer clinics and support the health costs of our many children. Very generously, three doctors and three nurses from a University in Barranquilla came forward and volunteered to visit the school and examine our children.

We opened the school on a Saturday at 9am for the doctors’ visit. They gave the children and their parents health advice and gave a short medical examination to the children and to younger siblings of children at the school. One of the doctors worked specifically with the special cases of children who we were aware had pressing health needs while the nurses weighed and measured the children. The remaining two doctors prescribed basic medication to those that needed it. For the children with health issues needing further treatment the doctors referred to paediatricians, ophthalmologists and optometrists.

The Colombia Medical Priority Project will help fund the health care of our children in Colombia, run further clinics and provide health advice. Visit our Colombia Medical Priority Project to find out more.
