Teachers wanted

Stand by Me has two schools in Ethiopia, one situated in Bekoji and the other in Dembi Dollo.  The two schools are seeking to move towards more child-centred teaching approaches and there is an urgent need for teachers to share their expertise and help the children enjoy an ever better educational experience.

While we welcome approaches from all teachers there is a particular demand for teachers experienced in working with children with special educational needs.  Also, teachers of English, Maths, ICT and Science at both primary and secondary level to assist with the development of the material to be taught, as well as appropriate subject based teaching skills training. We have found that the best training approach is to model lessons, either teaching a real class or through role play where the teachers take the role of students, and explain to the teachers the principles and reasons behind the approaches taken. There is also a demand for those willing to engage in conversation with the teachers and students to help them develop their oral English skills.

We are planning to take an educational team to Ethiopia, leaving around the 19th March 2016 (during Holy Week when teachers in Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland will be on holiday and those in other parts of the UK might request leave of absence.) At this time of the year the weather will be hot but bearable.

Total costs (flights, accommodation, food and visas, excluding insurance) would be in the range of £1250, depending on the costs of flights and internal transport arrangements.

If you feel able to assist these teachers, or want further information, please contact either of our offices or email Robert, who will be leading the team – Robert@standby.me
